Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a cupcake tin with liners.
- Mix dry ingredients: whisk together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
- Incorporate wet ingredients: add the buttermilk, vegetable oil, egg, and vanilla extract. Mix until just combined.
- Add boiling water carefully and stir until the batter is smooth.
- Bake the batter in prepared cupcake liners for 18-20 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean. Let cool.
- Cook the sugar in a saucepan over medium heat until melted and golden amber.
- Add the butter and stir until fully melted.
- Stir in the heavy cream gradually, whisking until combined.
- Season with sea salt, then let the caramel cool slightly before using.
