- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 tsp baking powder
- 1/2 tsp baking soda
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
- 2 large eggs
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1/2 cup buttermilk
- 1 cup granulated sugar (for caramel)
- 6 tbsp unsalted butter (for caramel)
- 1/2 cup heavy cream
- 1/2 tsp sea salt (or more if desired)
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
- In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
- Mix the melted butter, eggs, vanilla extract, and buttermilk until well blended.
- Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, stirring gently until no lumps remain.
- Pour the batter into lined muffin tins, filling each liner about 2/3 full.
- Bake for 18-20 minutes or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean.
- While the cupcakes cool, make the salted caramel sauce by melting the sugar in a saucepan over medium heat.
- Add the butter and heavy cream, stirring until smooth and then mix in the sea salt.
- Once the cupcakes are cooled, make a small hole in the center of each and fill it with the caramel sauce, then drizzle more on top.
- Finish with a sprinkle of sea salt.
Notes
Don’t rush the caramel: Patience is key when making caramel. You can freeze the cupcakes without caramel and top them later for easy serving.
