Description
A delicious twist on a classic favorite, these savory pretzel dogs are perfect for movie nights or casual dinners.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 package of hot dogs (any kind you prefer)
- 1 cup warm water (110°F)
- 2 tablespoons sugar
- 1 packet (2 1/4 teaspoons) active dry yeast
- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon kosher salt
- 1/4 cup baking soda (for boiling)
- Coarse sea salt for topping
- Optional: melted butter for brushing
Instructions
- Activate the yeast: In a large bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until bubbly.
- Make the dough: Gradually stir in flour and kosher salt until a dough forms. Knead for about 5 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Let it rise: Cover the dough with a damp towel and let it rise in a warm place for about an hour, or until it doubles in size.
- Boil with baking soda: Preheat your oven to 425°F. In a large pot, bring 10 cups of water and the baking soda to a rolling boil.
- Shape the dogs: Divide your dough into 8-10 equal parts. Roll each piece into a long strand and wrap it around a hot dog.
- Boil the pretzel dogs: Once your water is boiling, working in batches, carefully add the pretzel dogs and boil for about 30 seconds.
- Bake: Place the boiled pretzel dogs on a greased baking sheet, sprinkle with coarse salt, and bake for about 12-15 minutes or until golden brown.
- Serve and enjoy: Brush with melted butter if desired and serve with mustard or your favorite dipping sauce.
Notes
Feel free to experiment with different toppings or add garlic powder and cheese to the dough for extra flavor.
