Description
A comforting dish combining succulent shrimp with hearty sausage in a rich, flavorful broth, perfect for busy weeknights or family gatherings.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 pound of large shrimp, peeled and deveined
- 1 pound of smoked sausage, sliced
- 1 large onion, diced
- 1 bell pepper, diced
- 2 celery stalks, diced
- 4 cloves of garlic, minced
- 4 cups of chicken broth
- 2 tablespoons of Cajun seasoning
- 1 can of diced tomatoes
- 2 bay leaves
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Cooked rice for serving
- Green onions and parsley for garnish
Instructions
- Sauté the vegetables: In a large pot over medium heat, add a splash of oil. Once hot, toss in the onion, bell pepper, and celery. Sauté until the veggies are softened, about 5 minutes.
- Add sausage: Stir in the sliced sausage and cook for another 5 minutes, allowing those lovely flavors to meld.
- Garlic time: Toss in the minced garlic and sauté for one more minute until fragrant.
- Mix in the broth: Pour in the chicken broth, diced tomatoes, Cajun seasoning, and bay leaves. Bring to a gentle simmer.
- Shrimp it up: Add the shrimp to the pot and let them cook for about 5-7 minutes until they turn pink and opaque. Don’t forget to season with salt and pepper according to your taste.
- Serve: Remove the bay leaves and serve the gumbo over a bed of rice. Garnish with chopped green onions and parsley for that extra pop!
Notes
Gumbo often tastes better the next day. Feel free to add okra or another favorite vegetable for a heartier dish.
