Description
A delightful side dish combining the flavors of French onion soup with buttered rice.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 cup long-grain white rice
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 1 large onion, thinly sliced
- 2 cups beef or vegetable broth
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)
- Optional: shredded Gruyère cheese for garnish
Instructions
- Sauté the onions: In a medium-sized pot, melt the butter over medium heat. Add your thinly sliced onions, stirring frequently to avoid burning. Cook until caramelized, about 15-20 minutes.
- Toast the rice: Stir in the rice and cook for an additional 2-3 minutes until the rice is lightly toasted.
- Add the broth and seasoning: Pour in the beef or vegetable broth. Add the garlic powder, along with salt and pepper to taste. Stir and bring to a gentle boil.
- Simmer: Lower the heat, cover with a lid, and let it simmer for about 18-20 minutes, or until the rice is tender.
- Finish & garnish: Fluff the rice with a fork, sprinkle Gruyère cheese on top if desired, and garnish with fresh parsley. Serve warm.
Notes
For the best flavor, use quality broth. Leftovers can be used in stuffed peppers or casseroles.
