Ingredients
  

For the Bolognese Sauce
  • 1 pound ground beef or turkey Use turkey for a healthier option.
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 medium carrot, diced
  • 28 oz can crushed tomatoes
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • to taste salt and pepper
  • a sprinkle red pepper flakes Optional for added spice.
For the Ziti
  • 12 oz ziti pasta
  • 2 cups ricotta cheese
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
For Baking
  • to taste extra mozzarella cheese for topping

Method
 

Cook the Ziti
  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil, add in the ziti, and cook for about 8 minutes until al dente. Drain and set aside.
Make the Bolognese Sauce
  1. In a large skillet over medium heat, brown the ground beef (or turkey). Drain excess fat.
  2. Add the chopped onion, garlic, and diced carrot, sauté for about 5 minutes.
  3. Stir in crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, oregano, basil, salt, and pepper. Simmer for 15-20 minutes.
Layer It Up
  1. In a large bowl, mix together the cooked ziti, ricotta cheese, and half of the mozzarella.
  2. Add in the Bolognese sauce and mix until combined.
  3. Spread the mixture into a greased baking dish and top with remaining mozzarella and Parmesan.
Bake Away
  1. Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes until bubbly and golden.
Serve and Savor
  1. Let the dish cool for a few minutes before serving. Pair with garlic bread or a salad.

Notes

This dish can be assembled ahead of time. Refrigerate and add an extra 10 minutes to baking time if chilled. Feel free to mix in veggies for added nutrition.
