Ingredients

For the Bratwurst Delight
  • 4 pieces bratwurst sausages
  • 2 cups sauerkraut, drained and rinsed
  • 2 medium apples, sliced Preferably Honeycrisp for their sweetness
  • 1 large onion, sliced
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon caraway seeds Optional, but adds a nice touch
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Method

Cooking
  1. Start by heating the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the bratwurst sausages to the pan. Cook them until they’re browned on all sides, about 5–7 minutes.
  2. Add the sliced onions and apples to the skillet. Stir and let them cook for about 3-5 minutes until the onions are translucent and the apples start softening.
  3. Pour the sauerkraut over the sausages, onions, and apples. Sprinkle the caraway seeds on top if using. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Toss everything to mix well.
  4. Cover the skillet and reduce heat to low, allowing everything to simmer together for about 15–20 minutes.
  5. Once done, serve the bratwurst on a bed of the sauerkraut mixture, optionally garnishing with fresh parsley.

Notes

If you're in a rush, you can skip browning the sausages, just ensure they cook through. Leftover sauerkraut makes a fantastic topping on sandwiches. A splash of apple cider or beer can enhance the flavor.
