Ingredients

Main Ingredients
  • 4 pieces bratwurst sausages (your choice of pork, chicken, or turkey) Choose your preferred type of bratwurst.
  • 2 cups sauerkraut, drained Ensure it's well-drained for best texture.
  • 1 large apple, sliced Honeycrisp is recommended for sweetness.
  • 1 piece onion, thinly sliced White or yellow onion works well.
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil Extra for sautéing if necessary.
  • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard (optional) Adds a nice tang to the dish.
  • to taste fresh thyme or parsley for garnish Optional but adds a nice touch.

Method

Cooking
  1. In a large skillet, heat about 1 tablespoon of olive oil over medium-high heat. Add the bratwurst sausages and cook until browned on all sides, about 5-7 minutes.
  2. Remove the bratwurst from the skillet and set aside. In the same skillet, add sliced onions and sauté until soft and slightly caramelized, about 3-5 minutes.
  3. Stir in sauerkraut and apple slices. Optionally, splash a bit of water or broth to help combine. Cook for another 5 minutes.
  4. Return the bratwurst to the skillet, nestling among the sauerkraut, apples, and onions. Drizzle with mustard if using. Cook for an additional 5 minutes until heated through.
  5. Sprinkle with fresh thyme or parsley before serving.

Notes

Feel free to experiment with different types of sausages! If your sauerkraut seems too tangy, the sweetness of the apple will balance it out nicely. For added flavor, consider using garlic or caraway seeds while sautéing the onions.
