- In a large skillet, heat about 1 tablespoon of olive oil over medium-high heat. Add the bratwurst sausages and cook until browned on all sides, about 5-7 minutes.
- Remove the bratwurst from the skillet and set aside. In the same skillet, add sliced onions and sauté until soft and slightly caramelized, about 3-5 minutes.
- Stir in sauerkraut and apple slices. Optionally, splash a bit of water or broth to help combine. Cook for another 5 minutes.
- Return the bratwurst to the skillet, nestling among the sauerkraut, apples, and onions. Drizzle with mustard if using. Cook for an additional 5 minutes until heated through.
- Sprinkle with fresh thyme or parsley before serving.
Notes
Feel free to experiment with different types of sausages! If your sauerkraut seems too tangy, the sweetness of the apple will balance it out nicely. For added flavor, consider using garlic or caraway seeds while sautéing the onions.
