Preparation
- Begin by lining a baking sheet with parchment paper.
Cooking
- In a medium saucepan over medium heat, melt the unsalted butter.
- Stir in the granulated sugar, water, and salt.
- Continue stirring until the sugar is fully dissolved.
- Keep cooking, stirring constantly until the mixture reaches a golden brown color (about 8-10 minutes).
- Remove it from the heat and stir in the vanilla extract.
- Quickly pour the toffee mixture onto the prepared baking sheet and spread it evenly with a spatula.
- While the toffee is still warm, sprinkle the semi-sweet chocolate chips over the top and let them melt for a few minutes before spreading the chocolate evenly.
- Sprinkle your chopped nuts over the melted chocolate and press them down slightly.
- Let the toffee cool completely at room temperature or in the fridge. Once hardened, break it into pieces.
Notes
Keep an eye on the color while cooking; the key to perfect toffee is the golden-brown hue. If you prefer a nut-free option, simply omit the nuts or replace them with other toppings like sprinkles or coconut flakes.
