Ingredients
  

For the Cake
  • 1.75 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 0.75 cups unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1.5 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1.5 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 0.5 cups vegetable oil
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 cup boiling water This helps to create a moist cake.
For the Frosting
  • 1 cup unsalted butter (softened)
  • 3.5 cups powdered sugar
  • 0.5 cups unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 0.5 cups heavy cream Adjust for desired frosting consistency.
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract

Method
 

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  3. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  4. Add in the eggs, milk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract. Beat on medium speed for about two minutes.
  5. Stir in the boiling water until well combined.
Baking
  1. Pour the batter evenly into the prepared pans.
  2. Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  3. Let the cakes cool in the pans for about 10 minutes before transferring them to wire racks to cool completely.
Frosting and Assembly
  1. In another bowl, beat the softened butter until creamy.
  2. Gradually add the powdered sugar and cocoa powder, alternating with heavy cream. Mix in the vanilla extract.
  3. Place one cake layer on your serving plate and spread a layer of frosting on top.
  4. Carefully place the second layer on top and frosted the top and sides of the cake.
  5. Sprinkle with chocolate shavings or colorful sprinkles if desired.

Notes

For a buttermilk substitute, mix regular milk with a teaspoon of vinegar or lemon juice. To enhance chocolate flavor, add a pinch of espresso powder to the batter.
