Ingredients
  

Potatoes and Dairy
  • 4 medium medium-sized potatoes, thinly sliced Russets or Yukon Gold potatoes recommended
  • 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese or any cheese of your choice
  • 1 cup heavy cream can substitute with half-and-half
  • 1 cup milk can use a dairy-free milk alternative
  • 3 tablespoons butter, melted for greasing and in the creamy mixture
Seasonings
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • to taste Salt and pepper
Garnish
  • optional Fresh parsley or chives for garnish

Method
 

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Grease a 9x13-inch baking dish with a little butter or cooking spray.
  3. Layer half of the sliced potatoes in the baking dish, and sprinkle with salt, pepper, and half of the minced garlic.
  4. Sprinkle a cup of shredded cheddar cheese over the potatoes.
  5. In a bowl, whisk together the heavy cream, milk, melted butter, onion powder, and the remaining garlic. Pour this mixture over the layered potatoes.
  6. Layer the remaining potatoes on top and pour the rest of the cream mixture. Finish with another generous layer of shredded cheese.
Baking
  1. Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake for about 45 minutes.
  2. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes or until the top is golden and bubbly.
  3. Let the dish cool for a few minutes before serving to avoid burns.
  4. Garnish with fresh parsley or chives if desired.

Notes

Make ahead: assemble the dish a day in advance and refrigerate. Reheat in the oven when ready to serve. Feel free to add cooked vegetables or protein like broccoli or ham.
