Method
Preparation
- In a large bowl, combine the flour, salt, and sugar. Add the cubed butter and mix until it resembles coarse crumbs.
- Gradually add cold water, mixing until the dough comes together. Wrap it in plastic wrap and refrigerate for about 30 minutes.
Filling Preparation
- While the dough chills, prepare your filling. Use fruit preserves for a sweet filling or chopped cooked meat for a savory option. You can also combine sweet and savory fillings.
Assembly
- On a floured surface, roll out the dough to about 1/8 inch thick. Cut circles using a biscuit cutter or the rim of a glass—aim for about 4 inches in diameter.
- Place a spoonful of your filling onto one half of each dough circle. Leave some space around the edges to seal them properly.
- Fold the dough over for a half-moon shape and pinch the edges to seal. Crimp the edges with a fork for extra security.
Cooking
- In a deep skillet, heat about an inch of oil over medium heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C).
- Carefully place a few pies in the hot oil and fry them for 2-3 minutes per side, or until golden brown.
- Use a slotted spoon to remove them and let them drain on paper towels.
Serving
- Let the pies cool slightly before enjoying. Pair sweet pies with ice cream or savory pies with a drizzle of hot sauce.
Notes
You can use store-bought pie crust for a quicker alternative. If filling leaks during frying, it adds texture and flavor.
