Ingredients

Mushrooms and Coating
  • 1 pound fresh mushrooms (white button or cremini)
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 cup buttermilk (or regular milk) Regular milk can be used if needed.
  • Vegetable oil (for frying) Amount depends on the skillet size.

Method

Preparation
  1. Clean the mushrooms with a damp cloth and remove the stems if desired.
  2. In one bowl, whisk together the flour, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. In another bowl, pour the buttermilk.
Dredging and Frying
  1. Dip each mushroom into the buttermilk, letting excess drip off, then coat in the flour mixture.
  2. Heat about 1 inch of vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.
  3. Carefully place the battered mushrooms into the hot oil, frying for about 3-4 minutes on each side until golden brown.
Finishing Touch
  1. Remove from oil and drain on paper towels. Serve hot.

Notes

For a spicy kick, add a pinch of cayenne pepper to the flour mixture. Ensure oil temperature is adequate to avoid sogginess or burning.
