Ingredients

For the Steak
  • 1 pound beef round steak
  • 1 cup buttermilk Can substitute with milk mixed with vinegar or lemon juice.
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Vegetable oil for frying
For the Homestyle Gravy
  • 4 tablespoons leftover flour from frying
  • 2 cups milk
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Method

Preparation
  1. Marinate the steak in buttermilk for at least 30 minutes.
  2. In a bowl, whisk together flour, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper.
Cooking
  1. Heat vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.
  2. Dredge the marinated steak in the seasoned flour, shaking off any excess.
  3. Fry the coated steak for 3-4 minutes on each side until golden brown.
  4. Transfer steak to a plate lined with paper towels to drain excess oil.
  5. For the gravy, discard most oil leaving about 4 tablespoons in the skillet with brown bits.
  6. Sprinkle leftover flour into the pan and whisk over medium heat for 1-2 minutes.
  7. Gradually add milk while stirring until gravy thickens; season with salt and pepper.
  8. Serve the gravy over the warm, crispy steak.

Notes

For best results, do not skip the buttermilk marinade and ensure oil is hot enough for frying.
