Ingredients

Main Ingredients
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour plus a little extra for dusting
  • 1.5 cups warm water not too hot, or you’ll activate the yeast too quickly
  • 2 tablespoons sugar to add a touch of sweetness
  • 2.25 teaspoons instant yeast about one packet
  • 2 teaspoons salt to season the dough
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil for a perfect crust

Method

Preparation
  1. In a large bowl, combine the warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for about 5 minutes until it becomes foamy and bubbly.
  2. Stir in the salt and vegetable oil, followed by the flour, one cup at a time, until the mixture forms a soft dough.
  3. Lightly flour your counter and turn your dough out onto it. Knead the dough for about 8-10 minutes until it’s smooth and elastic.
  4. Place your dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm spot until it doubles in size, around 1-2 hours.
  5. Punch down the risen dough and turn it out onto a floured surface. Shape it into a loaf and place it in a greased 9x5-inch loaf pan.
  6. Cover again and let it rise for another 30-45 minutes.
  7. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  8. Bake in the preheated oven for about 30-35 minutes until golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.
  9. Let it cool in the pan for about 10 minutes before transferring it to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

Ensure your flour is fresh for best taste. Use a kitchen thermometer to check water temperature is around 110°F. Feel free to experiment with whole wheat or rye flour for variations.
