Ingredients
  

Apples
  • 6 to 8 medium-sized medium-sized apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp work great) Mixing different varieties can add complexity to the flavor.
Filling Ingredients
  • 1 cup granulated sugar Can substitute with honey or maple syrup.
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice Freshly squeezed preferred.
  • 1 tablespoon cinnamon Key ingredient for flavor.
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg Optional but recommended for added warmth.
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour Used for thickening the filling.
  • 2 tablespoons butter Adds richness to the filling.

Method
 

Preparation
  1. Peel, core, and slice the apples.
Mixing Ingredients
  1. In a large bowl, toss sliced apples with sugar, lemon juice, cinnamon, nutmeg, and flour until well coated.
Cooking
  1. In a large saucepan over medium heat, cook the apple mixture while stirring occasionally, until the apples soften and the mixture begins to bubble, about 5-10 minutes.
Finishing Touch
  1. Just before removing from heat, stir in the butter until melted and mixed through.
Cooling
  1. Allow filling to cool completely before using. Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to a week.

Notes

Feel free to add a splash of bourbon or vanilla extract while cooking for a twist. This filling can also be frozen for later use.
