Preparation
- In a large mixing bowl, combine 1 cup of warm water, sugar, and yeast. Stir gently and let it sit for about 10 minutes until it’s frothy.
- If using olive oil, add it to the yeast mixture now.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together the salt and 3 ½ cups of flour. Gradually add this dry mix to the wet mixture, stirring until a shaggy dough forms.
- Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead for about 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Place kneaded dough in an oiled bowl, cover it with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about an hour or until doubled in size.
Shaping and Baking
- After the first rise, punch down the dough to release air. Shape into a loaf and place it in a greased 9x5-inch loaf pan. Cover it and let it rise for another 30 minutes.
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake the bread for 30-35 minutes until golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped.
- Remove from the oven, let it rest in the pan for a few minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool fully. Slice it up and enjoy!
Notes
If the dough is too sticky, sprinkle more flour while kneading. For faster rising, place covered dough in a slightly warm oven.
