Ingredients

Bread Ingredients
  • 3.5-4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 packet active dry yeast (2 ¼ teaspoons)
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1.5 cups warm water (about 110°F)
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil optional but delicious

Method

Preparation
  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine 1 cup of warm water, sugar, and yeast. Stir gently and let it sit for about 10 minutes until it’s frothy.
  2. If using olive oil, add it to the yeast mixture now.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together the salt and 3 ½ cups of flour. Gradually add this dry mix to the wet mixture, stirring until a shaggy dough forms.
  4. Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead for about 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  5. Place kneaded dough in an oiled bowl, cover it with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about an hour or until doubled in size.
Shaping and Baking
  1. After the first rise, punch down the dough to release air. Shape into a loaf and place it in a greased 9x5-inch loaf pan. Cover it and let it rise for another 30 minutes.
  2. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake the bread for 30-35 minutes until golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped.
  3. Remove from the oven, let it rest in the pan for a few minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool fully. Slice it up and enjoy!

Notes

If the dough is too sticky, sprinkle more flour while kneading. For faster rising, place covered dough in a slightly warm oven.
