Ingredients
  

Dry Ingredients
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour Can use bread flour for a chewier texture
  • 1.5 teaspoons salt
  • 1 tablespoon sugar Adds a little sweetness
  • 2.25 teaspoons active dry yeast One packet
Wet Ingredients
  • 1.75 cups warm water Not boiling, needed to activate yeast
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil Adds moisture and flavor

Method
 

Preparation
  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, salt, sugar, and yeast. Mix well.
  2. Pour in the warm water and olive oil. Use a wooden spoon to mix until combined.
  3. On a floured surface, knead the dough for 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. Place the kneaded dough in a greased bowl, cover with a clean towel, and let it rise until doubled in size (about one hour).
Baking
  1. After rising, punch down the dough gently and shape it into a loaf.
  2. Place the loaf in a greased loaf pan and cover it again to rise for an additional 30 minutes.
  3. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C) and bake for 30-35 minutes until golden brown.
  4. Cool the bread in the pan for a few minutes, then turn out onto a wire rack.

Notes

Monitor the dough temperature; yeast loves warmth. Feel free to add herbs or cheese for flavor. Bread freezes well when wrapped tight in foil.
