Method
Preparation
- Dissolve the yeast in warm milk and let it sit for about 5 minutes, until frothy.
- In a mixing bowl, whisk together sugar, egg, melted butter, and the yeast mixture until smooth.
- Gradually mix in flour and salt until a soft dough forms.
- Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5 minutes until elastic and smooth.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let it rise in a warm place until doubled in size, about 1-2 hours.
Cooking
- Punch the dough down, roll it out to about ½-inch thick, and cut out circles.
- Heat oil in a deep pot to 350°F.
- Carefully drop the doughnuts into the hot oil, frying until golden brown, about 1 minute on each side. Monitor them to prevent burning.
Glazing
- While the doughnuts cool slightly, whisk together powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract until smooth.
- Dip the warm doughnuts in the glaze and sprinkle with colored sugar or sprinkles if desired.
Serving
- Enjoy your freshly made doughnuts with a cup of coffee!
Notes
Use a thermometer to ensure the oil is at the correct temperature. If in a hurry, these can also be baked in a doughnut pan. Store leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days.
