Ingredients

For the Hamburger Steaks
  • 1 pound ground beef (the leaner, the better)
  • 1/4 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped onion
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • to taste Salt and pepper
For the Onion Gravy
  • 1 large onion, sliced
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 teaspoon soy sauce (adds extra depth of flavor)
  • to taste Salt and pepper

Method

Preparation of Hamburger Steaks
  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, chopped onion, egg, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Mix until just combined.
  2. Form the mixture into four equally-sized patties about 1-inch thick.
Cooking the Patties
  1. Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat and add a splash of oil.
  2. Place the patties in the pan and cook for about 4-5 minutes on each side until nice and brown.
  3. Remove the patties and cover with foil to keep warm.
Making the Onion Gravy
  1. In the same skillet, add butter and sliced onions. Sauté until soft and translucent, about 5 minutes.
  2. Sprinkle flour over onions and stir to coat, cooking for about a minute.
  3. Add beef broth and soy sauce, stirring constantly until the gravy thickens, about 5-7 minutes.
  4. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
Serving
  1. Return the hamburger steaks to the skillet with the gravy and simmer for an additional minute.
  2. Serve drizzled with onion gravy, paired with mashed potatoes or steamed veggies.

Notes

Don’t skip the Worcestershire sauce! Prepare the patties ahead of time and freeze. If the gravy looks lumpy, it's normal and tasty!
