Preparation
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- In a large mixing bowl, beat together the softened butter and caster sugar until light and fluffy, about 5 minutes.
- Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition.
- Gradually fold in the self-raising flour until just combined.
- Split the batter in half and fold in cocoa powder into one half, adding a splash of milk for consistency.
- Grease and line a 9-inch ring cake tin and alternate spoonfuls of both batters, creating swirls.
Baking
- Place your cake in the oven and let it bake for 45-50 minutes.
- Check for doneness with a skewer; if it comes out clean, your cake is ready.
Cooling and Serving
- Allow the cake to cool in the tin for about 10 minutes before transferring it to a wire rack.
- Decorate with a dusting of powdered sugar or chocolate glaze if desired.
Notes
For best results, use room temperature eggs and sift cocoa powder to avoid lumps.
