Ingredients

For the Patty Melts
  • 1 pound ground beef (or turkey for a leaner twist)
  • 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 8 slices rye bread (or your favorite bread)
  • 8 slices Swiss cheese for melty goodness
  • Butter, for spreading because butter makes everything better
For the Secret Sauce
  • ½ cup mayonnaise
  • 1 tablespoon ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • A pinch of salt and pepper

Method

Prepare the Secret Sauce
  1. In a small bowl, whisk together the mayonnaise, ketchup, Dijon mustard, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Adjust the seasoning according to your taste.
Cook the Onions
  1. In a skillet over medium heat, melt a tablespoon of butter. Add the sliced onions, season with a pinch of salt, and sauté until they’re soft and slightly caramelized, about 5-7 minutes.
Form the Patties
  1. Shape the ground beef into four patties and season both sides with salt and pepper.
Cook the Patties
  1. In the same skillet, increase the heat to medium-high, add a little more butter, and cook the patties for about 4-5 minutes on each side or until they reach your desired doneness. Top each patty with a slice of Swiss cheese in the last minute of cooking.
Assemble the Patty Melts
  1. Spread a generous dollop of the secret sauce on one slice of rye bread. Top it with a cheesy patty, some sautéed onions, and another slice of bread.
Grill the Sandwiches
  1. In the same skillet, add a little more butter. Grill each sandwich until golden brown and crispy, approximately 2-3 minutes per side.
Serve and Enjoy
  1. Slice your Patty Melts in half and serve them warm with extra secret sauce on the side.

Notes

Don’t Skip the Secret Sauce: That little extra touch can take your meal from “meh” to “YUM!” Feel free to switch up the protein for a leaner option. Pair with homemade potato chips or a fresh side salad.
