Preparation
- In a mixing bowl, combine the flour, breadcrumbs, baking powder, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Give it a good stir until everything is well mixed.
- Add in the shredded smoked Gouda and mix again until combined.
- Beat the eggs in a separate bowl, then add to the cheese mixture. Stir until well combined to form a thick batter.
Cooking
- In a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium-high heat.
- Scoop out balls of the mixture, forming them into fritters (about 2 inches wide) and gently place them in the hot oil.
- Fry until golden brown, turning occasionally for even cooking, about 3-4 minutes per side. Avoid overcrowding the pan.
- While the fritters are frying, prepare the dipping sauce by combining balsamic vinegar, honey, Dijon mustard, salt, and pepper in a bowl. Mix until smooth.
- Once the fritters are golden and crispy, drain excess oil on a paper towel, serve hot with the dipping sauce on the side.
Notes
You can prepare the fritter mixture ahead of time and store in the fridge. For a healthier version, bake the fritters in a preheated oven at 400°F (200°C) for 15-20 minutes, flipping halfway through. If frying in batches, keep the finished fritters warm in a low oven.
