Spicy Nashville-Style Chicken Hoagies

A quick and delicious recipe featuring crispy chicken thighs in a spicy sauce, served in soft hoagie rolls with fresh toppings.

Ingredients
  

For the Chicken
  • 4 pieces boneless, skinless chicken thighs or chicken breasts, if you prefer
  • 1 cup buttermilk for that tender juiciness
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon smoked paprika
  • 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper adjust to your spice level!
  • to taste Salt and pepper
  • as needed cup Oil for frying
For the Hot Sauce Mix
  • 1/2 cup hot sauce your favorite kind
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 tablespoon honey for that sweet contrast
To Assemble
  • 4 pieces hoagie rolls
  • as needed Dill pickles you can never have enough pickles
  • as needed Shredded lettuce for a fresh crunch
  • as needed Sliced tomatoes because they make everything better

Method
 

Marinate the Chicken
  1. In a large bowl, soak the chicken thighs in buttermilk, covering them completely. Marinate for at least an hour or overnight for best results.
Prepare the Hot Sauce Mix
  1. In a small saucepan, combine the hot sauce, butter, and honey over medium heat, stirring until the butter is melted and the mixture is well combined. Set aside.
Coat the Chicken
  1. In a separate bowl, mix the flour, smoked paprika, cayenne pepper, salt, and pepper. Coat each chicken thigh in the flour mixture.
Fry the Chicken
  1. In a large skillet, heat oil over medium-high heat. Once hot, carefully add the chicken and fry until each side is golden brown and crispy, about 6-7 minutes per side.
Combine and Serve
  1. Once cooked, toss the chicken in the hot sauce mix until coated. Slice your hoagie rolls, add the chicken, and top with lettuce, tomatoes, and pickles.

Notes

You can adjust the spice level by using less cayenne or a milder hot sauce. For extra crunch, consider adding fried coleslaw on top of the chicken.
