Ingredients
  

For the Crust
  • 1.5 cups all-purpose flour
  • 0.5 cups unsalted butter, softened Make sure it’s fully softened for easy mixing.
  • 0.25 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 0.5 teaspoon salt
For the Filling
  • 3 cups apples, peeled and diced (Granny Smith recommended) Other apples can be used but Granny Smith adds tartness.
  • 0.25 cups brown sugar Adjust based on the sweetness of the apples.
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice Helps brighten the flavors of the apples.
For the Topping
  • 1 cup walnuts, chopped Can be substituted with pecans or omitted.
  • 0.5 cups oats
  • 0.5 cups brown sugar
  • 0.25 cups all-purpose flour
  • 0.5 cups unsalted butter, melted Ensure it’s not too hot when mixing.

Method
 

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease an 8x8 inch baking dish.
  2. In a mixing bowl, combine the flour, softened butter, granulated sugar, vanilla, and salt. Mix until crumbly.
  3. Press this mixture evenly into the bottom of the greased baking dish.
Filling
  1. In another bowl, toss together the diced apples, brown sugar, cinnamon, and lemon juice.
  2. Evenly spread the apple mixture over the crust.
Topping
  1. In a separate bowl, mix together the chopped walnuts, oats, brown sugar, and flour.
  2. Pour the melted butter over the mixture and stir until it resembles clumpy perfection.
  3. Spread the topping over the apples.
Baking
  1. Bake in the preheated oven for about 35-40 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apples are bubbly.
Serving
  1. Let cool for a few minutes, then cut into squares and serve warm.

Notes

These squares keep well in the refrigerator for up to three days. Warm them in the microwave before serving.
